Jesus, Elvis, and Me

words and music by R.L. Hargis

Sometime in April, round about a quarter to three
You know I woke up from the strangest wildest dream
Looked out my window and the sky'd turned red
I had to punch myself to make sure I wasn't dead

I heard a knock on my door and I wondered who it might be
When an old familiar baritone said "Hey man, it's me"
When I opened up the door, I almost had me a heart attack
Cause there he stood wearin black blue jeans and drivin a pink Cadillac

I shook my head and I stuttered and said I thought that you had expired
He laughed and said "Yeah man I know, but I really only just retired"
We walked out to that Caddy he said there' somebody here you gotta meet
I looked and there was Jesus Christ in the co-pilot's seat

I stood stunned for a moment I couldn't think of a word to say
Elvis said "I don't know where we're goin, but Jesus will show us the way"
Then we hopped into that Cadillac and headed off towards the sun
Just a carload of long-haired country boys out to have a little fun

And the Son of God turned the water into wine
Turned the grass into grass, man and we all got high
Then we went a-walkin, on the stormy seas
Just Jesus, Elvis and me
Just Jesus, Elvis and me

We'd just left Chicago and traffic was mighty tight
So we pulled into a campground where we hung out for the night
Me and Elvis took out our guitars and Jesus played the tambourine
And we all played "Amazing Grace" with three-part harmony

A crowd began to gather as we played a Hank Williams tune
The Jesus sang "I Am The Light Of This World" and Elvis did "Blue Moon"
I just sat there playin rhythm for the King and the King of Kings
And man you ain't heard nothin til you've heard Jesus sing

And the Son of God turned the water into wine
Turned the grass into grass, man and we all got high
Then we went a-walkin, on the stormy seas
Just Jesus, Elvis and me
Just Jesus, Elvis and me

The sun rose the next morning, I think it was a Easter day
So we packed our stuff up in the car and headed on our way
The sky was kinda cloudy as we headed out across the plains
Jesus said, "Where I live gorgeous gardens grow although it never rains"

I didn't mean to be staring but I kept looking at his hands
Cause on his palms he bore the scars of all the sins of man
When he noticed I was looking he said, "See what they did to me"
"But through my stripes you have been healed, my blood has set you free"

And the Son of God turned the water into wine
Turned the grass into grass, man and we all got high
Then we went a-walkin, on the stormy seas
Just Jesus, Elvis and me
Just Jesus, Elvis and me

We got back to New Jersey and we headed out to the shore
We built sandcastles on the beach and surfed without surfboards
Elvis was riding a wave in he said "Hey! Get a load of me!
I wish I could have pulled this off in Blue Hawaii"

As the day was ending, Elvis drove me back home
Jesus said as I left the car "You'll never walk alone"
Elvis shook my hand and said "Keep playin' that guitar"
"Though you'll never be as big as me, someday you'll be a star"

I turned around as I walked to my door and they rose up into the air
I went inside and got in bed and fell asleep in prayer
The next afternoon I woke up to see the blood red sky
I walked onto my front porch and I hung my head and cried

And the Son of God turned the water into wine
Turned the grass into grass, man and we all got high
Then we went a-walkin, on the stormy seas
Just Jesus, Elvis and me
Just Jesus, Elvis and me
